Sycamore Lodge Equine Hospital runs multiple programmes suitable for graduates and undergraduate students with a strong interest in developing their knowledge and career in equine veterinary medicine.

 INTERNSHIPS

Internship in Equine Medicine, Surgery and Diagnostic Imaging

Commencement dates are July 2024 and December 2024.

 

Sycamore Lodge welcomes eight graduates for a 13-month internship in Equine Medicine, Surgery and Diagnostic Imaging. Our internship is BEVA recognised and led by our three boarded European and American specialist surgeons. Additional support and learning opportunities are provided by our reproductive specialist and consultant specialist in internal medicine and critical care. Supporting this is our team of twenty vets, current interns, veterinary technicians and support staff.

The internship comprises rotation through all areas of the hospital including surgery, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neonatal intensive care, reproduction, anaesthesia, dynamic respiratory endoscopy and nuclear medicine, to name a few.

​

Applicants must:

​

- Have a veterinary degree registerable in Ireland – a list of degrees registerable in Ireland is available here from the Veterinary Council of Ireland

- Be enthusiastic, motivated and keen to make the most of their time as an intern

- Demonstrate competence and confidence in handling and restraining horses safely

- Speak English fluently

​

A two week externship is very strongly advised prior to internship application.

Successful applicants can expect:

EXTERNSHIPS

Sycamore Lodge Equine Hospital offers an equine veterinary medicine externship program for veterinary students. This programme runs year-round. However, some of our work is seasonal e.g. racing and stud work. Please take this into account when applying if you have interest in a specific area.

We recommend externships for a minimum of two weeks. Suitable students will have a strong interest in equine veterinary medicine and surgery.

Our Hospital

The hospital provides multidisciplinary equine medical services through our team of three boarded European and American specialist surgeons, twenty vets, interns and support staff.

Your experience:

​

  • The working day normally starts at 8:00 am. You may be asked to start earlier, especially during busy periods or when going on planned ambulatory calls.

  • The working week is from Monday to Friday

  • You will rotate through all areas of the hospital including ambulatory practice, stud work, racing work, lameness workups, anaesthesia, surgery, hospitalised medical cases and out of hours emergency work.

  • You will receive a timetable of your programme for your externship on the week you arrive.

  • You are encouraged to join in with out of hours emergency cases and will be assigned an out of hours rota.
